Tips for ripening avocados: add them to a paper bag with a banana or apple. These fruits produce a lot of ethylene, the ripening gas. Check your avocado every few days for ripeness. Once it becomes soft, it should be refrigerated to slow down the ripening process and keep it fresh longer.

The paper bag technique also helps to prevent uneven ripeness (partially hard, partially soft fruit), because ethylene will completely surround the fruit in a paper bag.
